Public baths are among the most common remains in the Roman world: widespread in the Mediterranean basin, they can be considered as one of the clearest signs of ‘romanization’, that is of the spread and systematic diffusion of the cultural values and social structures that the Romans put into effect throughout the territory they conquered. Recent studies of Roman baths have sought to deepen our knowlege of regional aspects in several provinces including Spain, France and North Africa. For Italy, however, details of finds have never been collected systematically, and there have been no scholarly occasions dedicated to this theme for a long time. The objective of the Workshop therefore is to bring together those who are currently studying an articfically-heated public bath building – that is excluding domestic baths and those which used thermo-mineral waters or natural source of heating – to share information, ideas and interpretations. The discussion was foster the updating of information and help to focus the main unresolved problems within the particular context of Roman Italy. The area to be included is that of the Augustan regions, including cities and minor centres of habitation, but excluding, because of their peculiarities, Rome, Ostia, Pompeii and Herculaneum. The timescale under consideration covers the period of the development of Roman society, from the late Republican period to the threshold of the fifith century A.D. The book, which includes the results of the discussions made during the seminar, contains 35 sheets of thermal buildings, many of which have never been published before, and some general essays that complete the scientific framework on the knowledge of Roman thermalism in Italy.
