The book presents a collection of essays on emerging phenomena that characterize contemporary society and on which depend conditions of social inequality that are widely treated in the public debate.

Although addressing different topics, the essays are organized as a reasoned path. The starting point is the scenario of the globalized society, whose conditionings and constraints of an economic and cultural nature seem to have subdued the role of politics and produced in Western countries a rapid increase of social inequalities. The essays that analyse this scenario discuss its origins and recent dynamics, what should be done to counteract an economic drift of social systems and the correct sociological use of the concepts that are exploited in the public debate.

The path continues focusing on some specific dimensions of social inequality. This analysis is realised through the perspective of gender and the perspective of generations, proposing the processes that in both can determine dynamics of exclusion or inclusion. The focus is on phenomena in which the economic and cultural constraints that mark the framework of contemporary society emerge, with a particular interest in the events concerning the youth condition. On this aspect, the essays analyse the difficulties related to the challenges posed by precariousness of life and work and the social marginalisation risks that may result.
