Abstract

Even though dictionaries and encyclopedias have changed in terms of structure, layout and medium – mainly due to globalisation and digitisation – lexicographic reference works should always be a central and fundamental tool not only for translation but also for learning a foreign language. (Council of Europe 2001, 2018) Thanks to the emergence of a new field of research within meta-lexicography – Research into dictionary use – empirical studies on the current use of lexicographic resources in foreign language teaching have appeared. In the present publication, Research into dictionary use, with its methodological issues, is extensively treated for the first time in Italian. Furthermore, an overview of empirical studies is presented, with the learner of foreign languages as the actual user. At the end, empirical studies conducted by the author in the field of German as a foreign language are described in more detail.
