Abstract

The essay attempts to trace different experiences of workers' unionism in several areas and environments since its distant origins in England in the 18th-century until the present day. Through comparative and long-term history, the paper highlights in every experience, its nature and purpose, its organizational and contractual models, and its relationship with Politics and Economy. Eventually after reconstructing the complex histories of union internationalism and outlining in broad terms the Italian specificities, the essay illustrates the problems, the challenges and the perspectives of modern trade unionism. According to the author the best way forward for the future of Labor, Enterprise and the Union consists in the free and democratic association of workers, in the autonomous and active participation in the Economy and the Politics, but above all in a renewed strong relationship between workers and primary associative realities.
