Abstract
Nella storia della generazione che si oppose al fascismo per poi divenire classe dirigente dell’Italia repubblicana, la vicenda di Manlio Rossi-Doria è insieme tipica e assolutamente individuale. È tipica la sua giovinezza, resa adulta come tante altre dall’impegno antifascista, culminata nell’adesione al partito comunista, nell’attività clandestina e nel carcere. Allo stesso tempo assolutamente individuale, perché Manlio Rossi-Doria compì, giovanissimo, una sua particolare scelta, quella di spendere il proprio impegno per il mondo agrario e il Mezzogiorno. Alla politica in senso stretto preferì, ogni volta che gli fu possibile, la “politica del mestiere”. Questa autobiografia è la storia di una identità intellettuale che si forma, la testimonianza di un’incrollabile passione civile, l’affermarsi del proposito di dedicare la propria azione al Sud, di farsi studioso e politico dell’agricoltura; una “scelta di vita” cui Rossi-Doria si tenne poi sempre fedele, e che lo pone nel novero dei grandi meridionalisti dell’Italia contemporanea.
In the history of the generation that opposed fascism and then became the ruling class of republican Italy, the story of Manlio Rossi-Doria is both typical and absolutely individual. His youth is typical, made adult like many others by his anti-fascist commitment, culminating in his joining the Communist Party, clandestine activity and imprisonment. But at the same time individual, because Manlio Rossi-Doria made his own particular choice at a very young age, that of spending his commitment to the agrarian world and the Mezzogiorno, and to politics in the strict sense he preferred, whenever possible, the 'politica del mestiere'. This autobiography is the story of an intellectual identity taking shape, the testimony of an unshakeable civil passion, the affirmation of the intention to dedicate his actions to the South Italy, to become a scholar and politician of agriculture; a 'choice of life' to which Rossi-Doria always remained faithful, and which places him among the great meridionalists of contemporary Italy.
