Abstract

The aim of this work was to reconstruct, through the analysis of three unpublished plaster models found at Villa Maruffi, the creative process and the history of Susanna, one of the most important works by Francesco Fabj Altini, today part of the collections of the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rome.

The artist, whose name today might be little known to non-specialists, was a pupil of two of the greatest sculptors of the time such as Adamo Tadolini and Pietro Tenerani Fabj Altini was himself a prominent figure of neoclassical Rome, attaining many prestigious positions of, including director of the Accademia di San Luca.

Starting with the analysis of the documents held by the National Gallery on Susanna’s marble, the research soon spread to various Capitoline archives, each of which provided an additional piece for the reconstruction not just of the history of this work, but also on the complex figure of Fabj Altini.

This publication also constitutes an opportunity to review and update our knowledge of the artist and his production, after more than twenty-five years after the last scientific contribution, that voice of the Italian Biographical Dictionary written by Giovanna Mencarelli that, together with unpublished dissertation by Emanuela Amadori (2002) and Luca Giordani (2013), form the foundations for this work.
